The local economy runs on retail (Morrisons' global headquarters is at Thornton Road), food and beverage production, engineering and automotive components, a substantial education sector, financial-services back-office operations, and a strong creative / cultural sector - Bradford is UK City of Culture 2025. Industrial disease - wool, worsted, mill engineering
Bradford's 'Worstedopolis' heritage - and the engineering sector (Jowett cars, heavy engineering, mill machinery) that served it - left a severe legacy of occupational disease. Asbestos-lagged steam boilers and mill infrastructure produced a long tail of mesothelioma, pleural plaques and asbestos-related lung cancer. Loom-shed noise produced an epidemic of NIHL / tinnitus. Wool / worsted dye and finishing work contributed to occupational dermatitis and occupational asthma. Limitation runs from date of knowledge - so historic exposures remain actionable today. See asbestos claims, industrial deafness and dermatitis.
