Since 26 March 2012, University Hospital Coventry (part of UHCW NHS Trust) has been a designated Level 1 Major Trauma Centre - one of four adult MTCs in the West Midlands alongside Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, Royal Stoke University Hospital, and paediatric cover at Birmingham Children's Hospital. UHCW admits more than 1,800 major-trauma patients a year from RTCs, falls and assaults, and its purpose-built Emergency Department sees around 160,000 attendances annually. The hospital opened on the current Walsgrave site in 2006 as a 1,250-bed teaching hospital, replacing the former Walsgrave Hospital and the city-centre Coventry and Warwickshire Hospital. Air transfers come via the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance; road transfers via West Midlands Ambulance Service.
