Plymouth is Devon's largest city - around 265,000 in the city, at the centre of a Plymouth / South West Devon region of roughly 400,000. The local economy is anchored by HMNB Devonport (Western Europe's largest naval base), Babcock International's Devonport shipyard (which refits and decommissions the UK's nuclear submarines), Plymouth University, Plymouth Marjon University, a substantial marine / fisheries sector, and a growing digital / tech cluster. Serious injuries across Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly route through the Peninsula Major Trauma Centre at Derriford Hospital.

The types of Plymouth / Devon / Cornwall personal injury claim we handle
Road traffic accidents across Plymouth and the Peninsula
A38 (Devon Expressway) is the Peninsula's spine - from Bodmin in the west to the M5 at Exeter in the north. A30 across Cornwall, A379 coastal, A386 up Dartmoor. Remote rural geography generates long ambulance / air-ambulance response times. See car accident claims, cycle accident claims, motorcycle accident claims, pedestrian accident claims, whiplash claims.
Plymouth Citybus and Stagecoach
Plymouth Citybus (Go-Ahead Group) runs the city bus network; Stagecoach South West runs regional services. Great Western Railway operates the Plymouth-London / Penzance rail network. See bus and coach accident claims.
HMNB Devonport and Babcock shipyard
HMNB Devonport and Babcock's adjacent shipyard (UK's nuclear submarine refit and decommissioning facility, plus surface-fleet work) together employ roughly 10,000 people across military and civilian workforces. Injuries to serving military personnel engage the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS) - a tariff-based, no-fault scheme - and, in some cases, a parallel common-law claim against the MOD. Civilian workers (Babcock, contractors) claim via standard EL insurance. Historic asbestos exposure in submarine and surface-ship work is a significant source of mesothelioma / asbestos-related disease claims today. See military accidents, factory accident claims and asbestos claims.
Construction
Plymouth Railway Station redevelopment, Millbay Boulevard, The Cube, Bretonside bus-station site, Oceansgate cluster (Devonport). See construction site accident claims.
Marine, fishing and leisure
Plymouth Fisheries is one of the UK's largest fish markets. Sailing, marine leisure, Royal William Yard water-frontage. Injuries on commercial fishing vessels, water-sports injuries, and marine-industry work. See factory accident claims.
Medical negligence in Plymouth
Plymouth's principal NHS Trust is University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, running Derriford Hospital. Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS FT covers Exeter and East Devon. Torbay and South Devon NHS FT covers Torbay. Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust (Truro) covers Cornwall. See medical negligence.
Public liability across Plymouth and the South West
Slips at Drake Circus, The Barbican, Royal William Yard; pavement trips against Plymouth / Devon County / Cornwall Council; hotel chain claims; venue injuries at Home Park, Plymouth Pavilions. Heavy holiday-season footfall along Devon / Cornwall coastal towns generates a distinct summer claim pattern. See slips, trips and falls, pavement accident claims and holiday accidents.
Industrial disease - Devonport, dockyards, clay industry
Devonport's naval dockyard heritage left Plymouth one of the UK's asbestos-epicentre regions - mesothelioma, pleural plaques, asbestos-related lung cancer from shipyard, submarine and refit work. The Cornish china-clay industry (around St Austell) and historic tin mining added silicosis and pneumoconiosis claims. HAVS / NIHL remain common across defence and marine engineering. See asbestos claims, industrial deafness and vibration white finger.
Where your claim could end up - local courts
- Plymouth Combined Court Centre (10 Armada Way).
Peninsula Trauma Network - Derriford as the MTC
The Peninsula Trauma Centre at Derriford Hospital, part of University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, was designated in 2012 and is the only Major Trauma Centre for Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Four Trauma Units feed the network: North Devon District Hospital (Barnstaple), Royal Cornwall Hospital (Truro), Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, and Torbay Hospital. Derriford provides full on-site trauma services - emergency medicine, general surgery, neurosurgery, orthopaedic, plastic, spinal, maxillofacial, cardiothoracic, vascular and interventional radiology. The PTC receives approximately 400 patients a year by air ambulance.
